Living at Home’s Respite Program………………………
Are you a Family Caregiver? If so, perhaps we can help. Caring for an elderly family member can be a rewarding experience. It can also be a stressful experience, both emotionally and physically. At Living at Home, we are committed to helping you to be the best possible caregiver.
What respite services are offered? Trained volunteers can come to your home each week to provide you with the opportunity to spend some time away from your caregiving responsibilities. Our respite program is designed to provide a safe environment and informal care for frail or disabled elderly adults, in order to give the primary caregiver a break or “respite” from their responsibilities. Persons in early to mid-stage dementia may also qualify. The care receiver benefits from spending time with the volunteer. Activities outside the home are permitted as appropriate.
Who can use this program? The care receiver needs to be 60 or older. The caregiver can be any age.
What are the restrictions for the volunteers who provide the care? Volunteers do not do bathing, heavy lifting, nursing care or dispense medications. (Volunteers may give medication reminders.) Volunteers may assist with simple meals the caregiver has planned. Volunteers are limited to 2-4 hours per week. Volunteers are unable to do overnights.
How do I sign up for this program? Before a volunteer is assigned, a Living at Home staff member makes a personal visit to the home. At this time, staff will determine if the person’s needs can be met by the program. A Release of Liability form is signed before a volunteer can be assigned. A Living at Home staff person will orientate the volunteer at their first assignment with your loved one. Our ability to fill any request is dependent upon the availability of volunteers.
What is the cost for using the respite program? There is never a “fee” for services provided by the Program. Donations are gratefully received and play an important part in sharing in our operational costs.
Are there other activities for caregivers? A monthly Caregiver Discussion Group meets the 4th Wednesday of each month from
